Excavations along The Thames Estuary in North Kent

Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited: Kent Papers 1

Peter Boyer, James Gerrard, Alexis Haslam and Stuart Holden with Jonathan Butler

Excavations along the Thames Estuary in North KentThis volume draws together the results of excavations at five sites along the north Kent coast from Dartford in the west to Westgate on Sea in the east, spanning the Mesolithic to post-medieval periods.

At West Hill Hospital, Dartford Bronze Age and Iron Age activity included the remains of two roundhouses. Three Romano-British burials may have formed part of a late Roman inhumation cemetery adjacent to Watling Street.

In Gravesend, worked flints suggest activity dating from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age. The sites lay in agricultural land from the Roman period until the early sixteenth century, when the area became important in the local fish-smoking industry.

Excavations on the High Street, Rainham  revealed the remains of the seventeenth-century vicarage and associated phases of extension and rebuilding, including structures incorporating elements of reused medieval masonry robbed from the parish church.

At Bell Road, Sittingbourne the remains of medieval backyard activity included a large assemblage of pottery and glass from cess pits. Medieval worked stone from nearby St Michael’s church, discarded during restoration works, was recovered from a twentieth-century foundation.

At Westgate on Sea, Mid to Late Bronze Age activity was attested by cut features and flintworking.
